I can't help noticing that Elon Musk has been sounding pretty annoyed about the OpenAI project he backed in the early days suddenly making a fortune since he stepped away from it - which according to reports happened after they rejected his 'offer' to take over leadership of the company - and has been talking of creating another of his own... I guess Elon needs a few months to try to catch up.

The problem with pausing the research is that it requires everyone with resources to agree to pause. That pause presents an opportunity for one of them to leap ahead.

Sorry, but no organization or company is going to slow down their AI development - especially if they have any amount of VC funding. Every day they don't work on it is cash up in flames. All a 6 month pause is going to do is allow those that are behind that don't adhere to the pause to catch up. The genie is out of the bottle and there is no going back.

So OpenAI says we can’t pause because others who don’t have our ethical governance won’t and then we won’t be able to counterbalance. But what is the point of ethical governance if you don’t follow it anyways?

As long as we can't reliably predict AI's and hadnt had the time yet to create actual failsafe systems to control the soon-to-be by faaar smartest Intelligence on our little planet we indeed should take a moment to figure out what we are actually doing. And not just to try being the very first to rush into to the abyss because of market competition.
